Wine was first introduced in New Zealand during the colonial times and James Busby is known to be the first New Zealand wine producer. In 1830’s James started producing wine in the Waitangi region. By mid 1800’s the first vineyard was established in New Zealand.

Wine Drinking was not very popular in the country during its initial stages, as beer and spirit were more in demand. It took a long time for wine to get a foothold in the country. Even after the prohibition period was over, wine producers had to face hard time producing it due to economic crisis.

During late 1960s, the situation of wine in New Zealand started changing. Great Britain ended the trade terms for New Zealand dairy and meat products when it entered the European Economic Community. This devastated the meat and dairy industries. Since small areas of income were to be made, large farms were turned into vineyards. Prohibition of trade was lifted in 1960 and regular sale of alcohol had begun. This gave rise to wine culture in New Zealand.

However, the actual popularity of wine in New Zealand happened during the early years of 1970 when young New Zealanders travelled and worked overseas, mainly to European countries. Cultural overseas experience helped the New Zealand wine industry to produce premium quality wines. As a result of this, Marlborough region started producing finest quality of Sauvignon Blanc. This wine was the first success of the New Zealand wine growers. Today, Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough is one of the premium wines and has gained a formidable reputation for) the country.

Origin of wine in Australia

The origin of wine making in Australia began in early 1788, by Captain Arthur Philip, at Sydney Clove. The initial experiments of vines proved to be unsuccessful. But the success stories of wine were yet to be written when the settlers discovered a good quality soil and favorable climate for growing wine grapes. This move motivated the wine industry to flourish in the land around Parramatta close to current Hunter Valley region.

The major growth in the Australian wine industry began with the introduction of European immigrants. They brought in the knowledge and experience needed for cultivating excellent vineyards. The original wines were heavily influenced by the European settlers which added to the taste of the Australian wine.

Australia continues to grow fine quality wine and is a favorite wine producer in Europe, America and Asian markets. Chardonnays, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer, and Verdelho are famous red wines country produce. White wines like Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Petit Verdot and Pinot Noir have gained reputation of premium wines to the country.
